MIGRATIONS IN BLACK AND WHITE | 2.0
Evanston Art Center: 1717 Central Street, Evanston, IL 60201
Opening Reception: Sunday, August 11, 5-8 pm - First Floor
On View: August 10 - September 8, 2024
Please RSVP (Eventbrite)
Performances by award-winning pianist Robert Irving III and Chicago’s Bronzeville Diva, Senabella Gill.
Curator Statement: Makeba Kedem-DuBose
"The art exhibition 'Migrations in Black and White | 2.0' is a bold showcase of black and white artworks. With a thematic focus on the essence of freedom, it reflects recent global events while projecting into the future. The exhibition stands out for its unique approach to color theory, allowing only black and white. This iteration rethinks the inaugural exhibition, which drew inspiration from the Great Migration and addressed the lack of visibility for South Side Chicago-based Black artists in the city's northern stretch."

Goals! I have recently been accepted into Alma Art & Interiors, a beautiful southside warehouse gallery featuring artwork of many mediums. Big step in reaching my goals for 2022.
Featuring The Supreme Sisters.
Handbuilt ceramic figures stand 29" - 32" high having quality conversations throughout the years. Based off an old logo for my art career, I decided to make them life-size reflecting all the shapes and sizes of women that we are, filled with strength, poise and beauty.

Exhibiting Artists: Jane Michalski, Kaitlyn Keely, Nancy Pirri, Sara Peak Convery, and Warren Perlstein with Traci Asher.
This exhibit was created by cancer thriver Traci Asher, Chicago photographer Warren Perlstein and curator Rosa Gallagher. The intent of the show is to ease fears of the unknown often felt by women diagnosed with cancer. Even though we might share a similar journey, we all walk through it differently. Five artists will use their unique skills to prove the theory that this disease can be fought with humor, beauty, and strength. The works selected represent a wide variety of media – photography, painting, ceramic, and encaustic.

My Survival Story
I survived Thyroid Cancer - papillary carcinoma - in 1995. “What lump?” I said to my mother. Aspirated, biopsied, and diagnosed. Two weeks later they removed it and I was cancer-free. I didn’t have the trauma most cancer patients have as no chemo or radiation was needed. The fear comes from will it return, and when.

“All in the Same Boat – or Are We?” is a large group exhibit of Chicago area artists scheduled to be held at Stola Contemporary Gallery, from July 15 – August 16th, 2020. The works, in a variety of media, would range from representational self-portraiture to abstractions of feelings and meditations at this time. This exhibit has been developed by artist and independent curator, Anne Farley Gaines, with the support of Stola Contemporary Director, Kelly Mathews, and James Stola, Gallery Owner. Its purpose is to bring artists and community together to display works relating to the pandemic of 2020 and the recent widespread violence which began with a single act of police brutality, and to benefit those in society who are struggling and economically affected.
SOCIAL DISTANCING REQUIREMENTS:
All who attend must practice social distancing and wear masks, preferably decorative. Gloves are also recommended.
PRIZES will be given for the 3 BEST MASKS on both days. Light refreshments will be served in a safe manner. The Saturday afternoon reception may migrate to the park across the street from the gallery, weather permitting.
10 people will be let into the gallery at a time. Parking lot available and a lovely park across the street to help with social distancing.

Divine Journey
Collaboration: Nancy Pirri & Cathi Schwalbe
Wood; ceramic; slip; mason stains; oil paint
We were inspired to work on this collaboration for obvious, prescient reasons. This pandemic has helped us all halt, sit with our thoughts, and examine ourselves and our actions. Nancy is certainly known for her figurative work and I leap at exploring a new medium. Nancy also knew I have been exploring the boat shape and actual paddling in my canoe, following a move closer to the Chicago River North Branch. This work explores our own experience through this pandemic, living alone, negotiating the fear and the unknown, often many times a day.

There is an inherent bond among men and women who share a journey through cancer. A sisterhood formed between Traci Asher, Sara Peak Convery, Jane Michalski, Nancy Pirri, and Laura Marie Sanchez over the shared desire to help remove some fear of the unknown from a cancer diagnosis. Each artist uses her own unique medium to guide the audience through her personal battle. This exhibition shows that the disease can be fought with strength, beauty and humor. Even though every individual diagnosis creates its own story, we are each 1 Cancer Patient. See My Story below.
Participating Artists: Traci Asher; Sara Peak Convery; Warren Perlstein; Nancy Pirri; Laura Marie Sanchez; Jane Michalski; and more!
My story: It’s 1995, and my mother asked me what that lump was going up and down in my neck while we were talking, like an Adam’s apple. I said only men have those. That lump turned out to be cancer – Papillary Carcinoma of the Thyroid Isthmus with no residual cancer spreading into the para-thyroid and no residual cancer in any other parts of my body. There were two lymph nodes removed both negative for cancer. Luckily caught early, I had surgery within 2 weeks with no chemo or radiation. I truly believe that a man I was in love with came into my life at just the right time and got me through a difficult period in my life. I was very lucky and now take Synthroid for the rest of my life. I have watched my mother survive cancer 3 times including many girlfriends, where some have fought and passed away.
In 1996, I discovered Lillstreet Art Center and it changed my life. I met one of my dearest friends, Marcia Adler there. We sculpted together for 10 years together, side by side, taking every class together, creating and collaborating on an extensive series of sculpture together. Marcia was my friend; part mentor, teacher, psycho-therapist; a wife and a mother and a beautiful artist who led one of the fullest lives I was happy to be a part of. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003, I watched her go through this awful disease almost always with a big fat smile on her face, making jokes about whether she should use “the cancer card” to get what she wanted in some situations. She was vibrant, brilliant and exciting, with a fashion sense everyone envied. Marcia succumbed to breast cancer in December of 2009; I miss her every day.
My creation, “Loss of a Friend” was made in honor of Marcia and it has been the “soul of my work” ever since, touching on the emotions and struggle to find the balance that women strive for all their lives. “Loss of a Friend” is in my permanent collection; I keep it as a reminder of the struggles women have with breast cancer; I don’t think I could ever part with it.

It is an honor to be invited by Inspired Interiors, Inc. to exhibit in this year's
SOFA Expo @ Navy Pier - Oct. 31-Nov. 3, 2019.
In a world where women continue to fight for equality, we are “Still Counting” the moments and milestones that make up a movement. Known for designing noteworthy exhibits focused on women’s empowerment, Emily Mackie, founder of Chicago’s Inspired Interiors design firm, gathered 21 female artists to create personal, powerful works provoked by the number of years it has taken to receive equal rights in a list of categories essential to living in true gender equity (think everything from Supreme Court appointments and Presidential nominations to the right to economic identity). These thought-provoking pieces will be auctioned off via mobile device during the SOFA exhibition, with 50 percent of proceeds benefiting a women’s rights organization. A live painting will blur the lines between artist and attendee, with silhouettes of guests continuously layered over another, illustrating how we’re all connected in this ongoing quest for equality.

Privates explores the nude figure, both male and female in the traditional sense, but also in a new and unexpected way. Not only is the nude figure a main element, but so is the exposure of capturing an individual in their most private moments. This produces an act of vulnerability. The more interpersonal relationships or romantic wrongs we experience leaves us on high alert, where we don't allow ourselves to be completely open.
Exhibited here are artists who take the most tender of moments and allow it to shine forth deepening the connection between artist and viewer.

Clay, Body
Figurative ceramic work by:
Robin Dong, Karen Goozner, Set Gozo, Nicholas Alexander Hayes and Nancy Pirri
Curatorial direction by Set Gozo
With the density and malleability of flesh, clay has long been associated with the human body. Amidst the prehistoric art in the cave at Peche Merle, the footprints of children have been preserved in the clay floor. Clay remembers its interactions with us. And we in turn grant it mythic qualities. From the God of Genesis to the God of Gene McDaniels’s “100 Pounds of Clay”, we imagine it is the origin of our bodies. In this show, Robin Dong, Karen Goozner, Set Gozo, Nicholas Alexander Hayes and Nancy Pirri explore the limitless potential of the human form through this intimate and powerful connection.

We join Nasty Women and their allies in the mission to challenge increasing threats to reproductive freedom, women and minorities, the LGBTQ community, and human rights of immigrants through mobilization and artistic expression.
This is a free event open to all ages that will sell artist submissions and include food and drink, music, speakers, and more. 100% of the profits from the sale of artwork will benefit Planned Parenthood of Illinois.
